Women's Soccer Falls to Clemson in Overtime

Clemson, S.C. -- The NC State women’s soccer team fell to Clemson, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday, Oct. 22 in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers’ goal was made by Molly Franklin. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors posted eight saves in the match. Clemson improves to 10-6-1, 5-3-1 ACC and the Wolfpack falls to 8-7-2, 3-6 ACC.
“We had several opportunities to put the game away in regulation,” said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. “We just really need to be able to finish those opportunities.”
Thirteen seconds into the match, senior Carol Tognetti took the first shot of the match, but the ball went high. Eight minutes later, Nuria Zufia responded with Clemson’s first shot, and Connors made her first save of the match. Twenty-three minutes into the game, Elizabeth Jobe took another shot for the Tigers, but it was blocked. Junior Jessica O'Rourke tried to head in the ball ten minutes later, but it went just over the crossbar. With three minutes left in the half, Jobe took another shot, but Connors was there for the save.
A minute into the second half, freshman Briana Cunningham attempted to put the Pack on the board, but Clemson goalie Ashley Phillips saved the ball from going in. At the 59:56 minute mark, freshman Katie Ruiz took a corner kick for the Pack. Freshman Chantalle Dugas tried to capitalize off the corner, but her shot was blocked, and O’Rourke quickly responded with a shot of her own, but Phillips made the save. The Tigers had an opportunity with a corner kick of their own, but Lindsey Jackson’s attempt off of Meghan Smith’s corner went wide. With ten seconds left in regulation, Ruiz took a shot, but Phillips made the save sending the game into overtime.
Twenty-five seconds into overtime, Molly Franklin scored the game winning goal to give Clemson the 1-0 victory.
The red and white hosts High Point on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Method Road Soccer Stadium at 3 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for 4 p.m.
