BOX SCORE
Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team fell to Maryland, 3-2, on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. The red and white took the first two games and had the Terps on the ropes, before Maryland stormed back to win three-straight. Ashley Wallace and Jessica Williams led the Pack offense with 14 and 18 kills, respectively. Allison Davis hoisted 50 assists, while the team produced 13 total blocks. The loss pushes the Pack to 2-18 (0-11 ACC), while the Terrapins move to 9-11 (2-9 ACC).
NC State started off slow, surrendering the first four points to Maryland before finally scoring on a ball handling error. After falling behind 6-1, head coach Charita J. Stubbs called a timeout, and the Pack responded with a renewed effort. Down 11-6 the red and white put together a four-point run, shortly followed by another three-point run to mount its first lead of the contest at 12-13. When the Terps tied things up on the next point, the Pack responded by securing two in a row. Maryland called a timeout trailing 23-26 following a three-point NC State barrage, which the Wolfpack countered with another three-point assault, moving the lead to 23-29. A Tedi Doucet service error gave the Pack its clinching point, 24-30.
The Wolfpack took the first three points of the second game, but then coughed up 10 of the next 11, giving the Terrapins a 10-4 advantage. NC State things kept interesting despite Maryland maintaining a lead, until an Aiwane Iboaya kill sparked a six point State swing, giving the hosting squad its first lead of the game, 19-21. Maryland rebounded, however, putting together four consecutive points to force Stubbs to signal for a timeout with the Terps leading 26-23. With Maryland serving for match point, Wallace forced extra play on a kill to knot the score at 30-30. A Terrapin attack error put the Pack one point away from closing the door, which Keshia Raibon did with a kill, 30-32.
The red and white started game three in a funk, as Maryland dominated from the onset of play. The Pack hit a match-low .083, while Maryland swung a .146 hitting percentage. NC State committed eight errors, despite drilling 16 kills. With Maryland serving for game point at 29-27, Wallace drilled a kill to continue play, but an attack error from Raibon sailed long, and Maryland took the game 30-28.
The Pack came out flat in the fourth game, as the Terrapins easily cruised to a mammoth 16-3 lead. Trailing 24-9, NC State put together four-straight points, pointing the score to 24-13 and forcing a Maryland timeout. The Terrapin lead wouldn’t wilt, however, as they held on to close out 30-15, and force a deciding fifth game.
NC State grabbed the first point of game five on a Williams kill, before dropping the next five. With Maryland leading 9-4, NC State went on a three-point run before the Terps scored again to mark a 10-7 score. As the Terrapins served for match point with a 14-9 lead, the Pack grabbed two points off of a Maryland error and a Williams kill, before a Jade Brown kill gave Maryland the win, 15-11.
NC State will host Virginia Tech and Virginia next weekend at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. The Pack will challenge the Hokies at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, before taking on the Cavaliers at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.
