Clemson, S.C. – The NC State volleyball team fell to Clemson, 3-0, on Friday, Oct. 13, in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers out-hit the Wolfpack .322 to .148, while committing five fewer errors and placing 18 more kills. The loss puts the red and white at 2-15 (0-8 ACC) on the season, while Clemson moves to 11-4 (6-1 ACC).
The Wolfpack offense struggled to get started in the first game, falling 30-16. NC State placed just seven kills while hitting .059 compared to Clemson’s 18 kills and .265 clip. With the Pack trailing 12-9, the Tigers collected nine of the next 10 points, mounting a 21-10 lead and putting the game out of NC State’s reach.
The red and white’s offense proved more potent in the second game, despite falling 30-19. Six Pack players recorded kills, while Jessica Williams led the squad with three. Clemson, however, fouled up just four times, compared to eight NC State errors, and hit .324 to take the game.
The Pack put together its best effort in the third and final game, despite ultimately losing 30-24. NC State drilled 17 kills, just one shy of tying its total in the first two games combined, while posting a match-high .268 hitting percentage. Holding the lead on three separate occasions early during play, the Pack kept things close as both teams traded blows at the onset of play. Up 17-16, Clemson grabbed six of the next seven points, building its lead to 23-17. NC State, however, still refused to quit. Down 25-18, Janay Yancey grabbed three straight points for the Pack with a kill, followed by two service aces, to put the score at 25-21 and force a Tiger timeout. When play resumed the Tigers quickly grabbed four points and ended the evening.
Kelley Blakewood led NC State with a season high 11 kills, while Williams and Keshia Raibon each added eight. Allison Davis was credited with 32 assists.
“The final score doesn’t necessarily show how well we played,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs. “We played really well at times and put together a couple of really impressive stretches.
“Keshia and Kelley played really well for us. I was very impressed with the effort that Kelley gave us tonight, especially considering that this was her first match of the year playing at the outside position for us. Jessica Williams was also key for us tonight, putting together her most complete game of the season to this point.”
NC State will take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
