Durham, N.C. -- The NC State women’s soccer team (6-3-2, 1-2 ACC) was defeated by Duke, 3-0, on Sunday, Oct. 1. Duke’s goals were scored by Elisabeth Redmond and KayAnne Gummersall. The Blue Devils’ third goal was an own goal by the Wolfpack. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors had three saves in the loss. The win improves the Blue Devils to 7-4-1, 3-1 ACC and NC State falls to 6-3-2, 1-2 ACC.
"We didn't start playing until 25 minutes in," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "Duke took advantage of that and kept the pressure on."
Twelve minutes into the first half, Redmond scored Duke’s first goal. After receiving a pass from Sara Murphy to the left, Redmond booted the ball from 16 yards out to the top right corner and over Connors’ hands. Eighteen minutes later, junior Jessica O'Rourke accidentally knocked the ball into the Pack’s goal, giving Duke a 2-0 lead going into the half.
With twenty minutes left to go in the second half, Gummersall scored Duke’s third and final goal of the game. She was fed the ball by Lauren Tippets, and hit the ball to the right corner from five yards out. The red and white only had four shots in the match.
The Wolfpack will host Wake Forest on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
