Gymnastics Claims First Place in Opening Meet of Season

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team started the 2006 season off by claiming first place in a four-team meet at Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon. The Wolfpack (3-0) came away with a team score of 188.575, followed by San Jose State in second with a 188.450, Cal State Fullerton with a 187.975 for third, and Utah State was fourth with a 187.925. Junior Rachel Katz scored a first place finish on vault, and was NC State's top finisher on all three of her events.
The Pack's best event of the day was on vault, with NC State scoring a team-best score of 48.725. Katz finished first on the day with a score of 9.875. Sophomore Leigha Hancock placed sixth with her 9.75, and junior Katie Ozburn was eighth with a 9.725.
On bars, NC State came away with a team score of 47.425. Katz once again led the Pack, as she finished fourth with a 9.625. Freshman Elyse Adams matched Katz on bars, also scoring 9.625. Senior Kylah Bachman and sophomore Kelsey Lee each tied for ninth with a 9.55.
NC State struggled on beam, with a score of just 45.025. Katz placed seventh with a 9.25, and Ozburn also landed in the top-10 with a ninth place showing with her 9.2.
The Pack recovered on floor with a team score of 47.400. Bachman took home top honors on floor, winning her first title of the season with a 9.65. Sophomore Heather Zolton and freshman Ashley Shepard each scored a 9.625 and tied for third. Junior Crisann Calvo placed eighth with a 9.5.
In the all-around, Bachman was third (37.350) and Zolton was fourth (36.850).
NC State will host the first home meet of the season, this Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack will host conference foe Rutgers at 1:00 p.m.
