No. 45 Wolfpack Men's Tennis Trumps American, 7-0

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 45 NC State men's tennis team returned to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. Playing host to American University in the first of two matches on the day, the Wolfpack downed the Eagles, 7-0. NC State collected two doubles and six singles decisions to pick up the team victory. The Wolfpack now stands at 4-0 on the season, while American slides to 0-2.
NC State started the match with a 1-0 advantage after securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Nick Cavaday and freshman Chris Welte took down Sebastian Proisy and Ben Weltman, 8-3, at No. 2, while junior William Noblitt and sophomore Ben Zink flew by Josh Levitz and Jeff Schnell, 8-2, at No. 3. Seniors Val Banada and Will Shaw suffered the Pack's first loss of the season at No. 1, falling to Nicolas Frayssinoux and Juancarlo Vazquez, 8-6.
Banada secured the Pack's second team point, finishing first at No. 4 singles with a win over Andrew Singer, 6-2, 6-2. Welte followed suit, downing Proisy at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3. Cavaday sealed the team victory by collecting a decision at No. 1 over Frayssinoux, 6-1, 7-5.
The most captivating, and longest, match of the day belonged to junior Andre Iriarte, who defeated Vazquez at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set, Iriarte stormed back to collect the second frame before taking the match in a super-breaker, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14). At No. 5 Shaw defeated Schnell, 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore David Rozek wrapped up competition at No. 6 with a win, 6-1, 6-2, over Jason Harris.
The NC State men's tennis team will play one more match today, Saturday, Jan. 28, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. The Pack will take on UNC Greensboro at 5 p.m.
