DURHAM, N.C. - NC State's wrestling team put its lost weekend trip to Maryland and Ohio University behind it Tuesday night with a sound 26-7 victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference match at Duke. The Wolfpack improved to 7-3 in dual matches overall and evened its mark in ACC action at 1-1.
The Wolfpack won eight of 10 matches against the Blue Devils, including six in a row after losing the first match of the evening when Michael Degli Obizzi won by major decision over Jeff Breese. Freshman Jalil Dozier defeated Duke's Philip Wightman 7-4 at 141, and freshman Joe Caramanica put the Wolfpack ahead to stay with a 12-2 major decision over Daniel Shvartsman at 149. Caramanica improved to 18-5 with the victory.
Redshirt-junior Bryant Reams (157), freshman Obie Simpson (165) and junior Rick Brownlee (174) kept the NC State winning streak alive with decisions, and freshman Jeremy Colbert capped it with a 12-4 major decision over Dan Tulley at 184.
Duke stopped the streak with Konrad Dudziak's 9-5 win over Wolfpack freshman Mark Jahad at 197, but junior heavyweight Jainor Palma extended his career-best winning streak to seven matches with a 5-2 decision over Wade Van Sickle. Palma's victory was his 20th of the season in 24 bouts, making him the first NC State heavyweight in eight years to win 20 matches in a season.
Redshirt-junior Jeremy Hartrum concluded the match for the Pack with a 5-0 victory over Duke's Kellan McKeon at 125 pounds. Hartrum improved to 13-6 with the win.
NC State will return to action on Friday evening at North Carolina. The match will begin at 7:30 at Chapel Hill's Carmichael Auditorium.
