Gymnastics Downs Rutgers in First Home Meet

Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 23 NC State gymnastics team opened its 2006 home season with a 191.000-187.000 home win over No. 20 Rutgers Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack (4-0) won all four event titles, and in fact claimed at least the top three spots in every event as well. Sophomore Heather Zolton won both bars and floor for the Pack, and Rachel Katz and Kylah Bachman each won an event for the second straight week. After a bye next weekend, NC State will travel to West Virginia for a meet on January 28.
The Pack start strong on vault, with a team score of 48.250 claiming the top-four spots. Junior Rachel Katz won her second straight title on vault to open the season, as she scored a 9.85. Sophomore Leigha Hancock was close behind in second with her score of 9.825. Fellow sophomore Amanda Zolton scored a 9.6 for third, and senior Kylah Bachman was fourth with her 9.575.
NC State then moved over to bars, and improved on its team score with a 48.825 and took the top-five spots. Zolton was the Pack's top finisher with her 9.85 for a first place showing. Bachman was close behind in second place with a 9.8, and Katz took third with her 9.75. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Elyse Adams with a 9.725 for fourth, and junior Crisann Calvo with a 9.7 for fifth.
For the second straight week, NC State struggled on beam this time scoring a 46.025. Bachman was the Pack's top finisher with her 9.65 for first place.
NC State finished the meet on floor with a team score of 47.900. For the second event of the day, Zolton once again came away with a first place finish, winning floor with a 9.775. Bachman scored a 9.675 and was second, and Hancock took third with a 9.65.
NC State will not be in action next week. The Pack's next meet will be January 28 at EAGL rival West Virginia. NC State will return to Reynolds Coliseum on February 10 and host the annual Hearts Invitational.
