Women's Tennis Freshmen Impressive at St. Mary's Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Sept. 17, the NC State women's tennis team got back to work at the second day of the St. Mary's Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Six Wolfpack netters collected solo victories over the course of the day, including both freshman Alejandra Guerra and Neils Barringer. Senior Barbara Orlay, who collected two wins on the afternoon, will advance to the championship round of her flight tomorrow.
In Flight One singles, Orlay offered a solid performance, collecting two wins to advance to the championship round. Facing Furman's Laura Gioia, Orlay collected her first solo win of the fall in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Orlay then advanced to the next round with a defeat of Blair DiSesa from Rice, 7-5, 6-2. Orlay will take on fellow ACC opponent Ashlee Davis of Wake Forest in tomorrow's championship.
Sophomore Julia Roach collected a win of her own in the first round of Flight Three singles, downing Furman's Laura Osborne in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Roach then fell to Anna Jerman from Wake Forest, 6-2, 6-4. Roach will take on hosting Tennessee's Bryce Marable tomorrow for third-place in the draw.
Fellow sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson dropped her first match to Wake Forest's Sierra Poske in Flight Four play, 6-0, 6-3. Johansson then fell again to Christine Dao, 6-2, 6-2.
In the fifth flight, Guerra took down Purdue's Anya Dzeva in two challenging sets, 6-4, 7-6. Guerra was then defeated by Wake Forest's Jenna Loeb, 6-3, 6-2. Guerra will battle Stephanie Harris of Tennessee for third-place in Flight Five singles tomorrow morning.
Junior Agustina Arechavaleta fell to Blakely Offutt of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-0, in the first round of Flight Six action. Arechavaleta then regrouped and knocked off Kentucky's Carolina Winebrenner, 6-4, 7-5. In a battle for fifth-place, Arechavaleta will take on Purdue's Whitney Reys tomorrow. Reys fell earlier in the flight to Barringer, in a shutout match that Barringer completely controlled, 6-0, 6-0. Barringer then fell to Tennessee's Samantha Orlin, 6-2, 6-2. Barringer will face Furman's Lauren Tomory for third-place on Sunday.
In Flight Seven, both of the sophomore Barry twins competed. Allison Barry fell to Bonnie Baird of Furman, 6-0, 6-1, and then topped Purdue's Paula Schmidt in a dominating shutout, 6-0, 6-0. Lauren Barry fell to Furman's Natasa Manojlovic, 6-1, 6-0. In the following match, L. Barry collected the first set against Amy Cao of Rice, but ultimately fell short, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0.
The Wolfpack netters will compete again tomorrow in Knoxville, Tenn., as play draws to a close at the St. Mary's Classic.
