RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer begins the first of four-straight road games when it travels to Pennsylvania for a match at Lehigh on Friday, Sept. 16, and a match at Penn on Sunday, Sept. 18. The Wolfpack, 4-2 on the year, is coming off of two losses at home to Sanford and Oregon. First up for NC State is a 5-0 Lehigh squad that has recorded five-consecutive shutouts and an 8-to-0 goal differential. Penn is 1-1-1 after three games and will have a chance to move above .500 when it hosts La Salle on Friday prior to NC State on Sunday. The Pack will be led by junior Carol Tognetti, who owns a team-best three goals and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz is 4-1 in her appearances and has made 15 saves to go along with two shutouts.
The Wolfpack will look to put behind the two recent losses that ended a four-game winning streak this last week. NC State was scoreless in the last two games, quite the contrary to its previous 9-to-1 goal differential. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz has started five matches and in that time she has posted two shutouts, assisted on a third, while recording 15 saves and allowing just two goals in nearly 439 minutes of action. Defensively NC State is solid as has held the opposing attacks to an average of only 7.2 shots per game and has only allowed three goals. Offensively, NC State has posted nine goals so far and averages 6.7 shots on goal per match. Junior Carol Tognetti has a team-high three goals and one assist for seven total points, while freshman Lindsay Vera is close behind with two goals and two assists for six points.
Lehigh will be looking defend its five-game win streak when its hosts the Wolfpack at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Mountain Hawks are 2-0 at home thus far as well while enjoying their best start in school history. Sophomore midfielder Jen Fetsick was honored as the Patriot League Player of the Week after she scored in both of Lehigh's games last week. She scored the game winner in a 2-0 win over La Salle on Wednesday, then provided an insurance goal in the Mountain Hawks 2-0 triumph at Stony Brook on Sunday. Fetsick's two goals tie her for the team lead and her five points are also tied for tops on the team. Keeper Julie Kafka has started four games and in 360 minutes has posted 23 saves and four shutouts. The Mountain Hawks are one of 13 Division I teams who are undefeated and untied in 2005. Lehigh is one of three teams (along with UNC-Asheville and Boston College) who have yet to yield a goal in 2005, but the Brown and White's shutout streak of 455:23 is the best in the nation.
NC State will then travel to Philadelphia to face Ivy League member, Penn, at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Quakers, 1-1-1, have been outscored 7-to-4 in their three matches. Sophomore defender Rachel Fletcher leads the team with two of Penn's four total goals and has one assist. Time has been split equally amongst the Quakers' two goalkeepers, Jessica Keeley and Britney Binler. Both have made five saves, while Keeley has allowed three goals and Binler four.
