CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jason Moon, a former All-American golfer at NC State, birdied six of the first 11 holes Wednesday and cruised to victory in the Tarheel Tour's Olde Sycamore Open at Olde Sycamore Golf Club.
Moon shot 65 to take home the $8,500 first-place check with a 14-under total of 202. It was the second professional victory for the 2003 Wolfpack graduate, and his first in a multi-day professional tourney.
"It was my day. I got up-and-down when I needed to and I holed some good putts," said Moon, who celebrated with his mom, who is visiting from Australia. "I shot 70 the first round, and the second day I started feeling more comfortable in my ball-striking. Today, I was firing on all cylinders."
Moon's bogey-free round blew away the competition on a windy afternoon. Runner-up Erik Herberth finished four strokes back.
Other former Wolfpack golfers who did well include David Sanchez, who tied for fourth at 209 and earned $1,750 and Justin Walters, who shot five under in the final round to tie for sixth place at 210 and took home $1,250.
The Tarheel Tour takes a week off before returning to action Sept. 27-29 with the Cabarrus Open at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, N.C. For more information, visit www.tarheeltour.com.
