Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team has been in the gym preparing for their 2006 season since school started, but next week begins the time when it gets serious. Assistant coach Todd Henry checks in this week with another edition of `Inside the Chalk Box' updated us on how the team is coming along this early in their workout schedules.
Henry: We are a week away from starting "official practice." Everyone looks great and adjusting well to the demands of college life. The workouts are open, which means the kids can practice on whatever they choose. We have the mandatory eight hours (running and circuit training). The 2005 team has really taken charge of the mandatory training. Each gymnast works out extremely hard during this time.
A few notables.....Freshman Dru Davis looks to be a possible four event starter for the Wolfpack this year. She is solid on all the events with no apparent weakness. Dru has an infectious laugh that really brings down the house! Heather Zolton returns in good form and works out effectively in the gym. She was always a hard worker but now she seems to understand the team concept better! Little (nickname) Leigha Hancock has a few surprises under her belt for this year. I will hold off on disclosing them until we have performed them consistently! Finally, Kylah Bachman is heading into her last year here at NC state. She is in great shape and will star for us in the all-around.
One final note, our home schedule is going to be very difficult this year. We have two SEC powerhouses coming to Raleigh, Auburn and Florida. Also competing in Reynolds this year will be Big Ten contender Michigan State, Denver and arch rival North Carolina. All these teams finished in the top 25 last year! Come out and support the team!!! Until next time!
