RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Wolfpack women's tennis team assembled at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center with one goal in mind; helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina. To do so, the team cleaned out its equipment room, while freeing some space in their own personal closets and bringing in a large amount of materials to donate. All in all, about 60 pairs of shoes and scores of clothing were donated and sent to multiple relief organizations, which will in turn ship the goods off to various areas effected by the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.
"As a team we wanted to contribute as much as we could to the hurricane victims," sophomore Julia Roach said. "We each brought in bags full of clothes that we wanted to give away and we cleaned out our lockers that had t-shirts, shoes and other NC State apparel."
In addition to the team's efforts, the families of local North Carolina roster members joined the effort, donating many items from their own homes and garages.
"Saturday was a special time for the team when we put the needs of others above ours," said Roach.
Head coach Hans Olsen echoed the sentiments of his players.
"The team wanted to do what they could do to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast," Olsen said. "This was their way of trying to help in any way that they could."
The women's tennis team will begin its fall schedule at the University of Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn., this Friday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 18. Next weekend, the Wolfpack will host the annual Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus.
