NC State women's soccer, now 4-1-0 on the year, will host west coast foe Oregon, 4-1-1, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. NC State has won four of its last five matches and is 3-1 on its home field. The match brings to a close the Wolfpack's five-game match home stand. The Pack returns to the road with a two-game spread in Pennsylvania, first at Lehigh on Sept. 16, and then at Penn on Sept. 18. Sunday's match versus Oregon is the first time the two teams will meet. Oregon is coming off a 2-0 win at Elon on Friday, Sept. 9.
NC State's four-game win streak came to a close on Friday night as the Pack fell to visiting Samford 1-0. The Wolfpack has won four of its last five matches. NC State owns an 8-7-1 all-time record at SAS Soccer Park and is 3-1 there this season. The Pack's senior goalkeeper Kim Selz has earned the start all five games heading into Sunday's afternoon match. In that time she has posted two shutouts, assisted on a third, while recording 15 saves and allowing just two goals in nearly 439 minutes of action. Defensively NC State is solid as has held the opposing attacks to an average of only 6.6 shots per game and has only allowed two goals. Offensively, NC State was held without a goal for the first time this season in the loss to Samford, but there are plenty of goals yet to come. The Pack has posted nine so far and averages 7.8 shots on goal per match. Junior Carol Tognetti has a team-high three goals and one assist for seven total points, while freshman Lindsay Vera is close behind with two goals and two assists for six points.
After a disappointing 3-13-3 record a year ago, the Ducks have already surpassed an entire year's victory total with their four wins in 2005. Senior forward Nicole Garbin has scored five of the team's eight goals for 10 points on the season. Four of those goals happen to be game-winners. The Oregon squad opened the season with consecutive shutouts over Eastern Washington and Louisiana State before falling to then No. 4 Portland 6-0. Since then, the Ducks have gone 2-0-1 with wins over Portland State and recently at Elon, 2-0 on Friday. The tie was versus Gonzaga in the match following the shutout by Portland. In net for Oregon will be freshman keeper Jessie Chatfield. She has allowed eight goals, six of which were at the feet of Portland, but has made 26 saves in nearly 565 minutes of action. Oregon is led by first year head coach Tara Erickson.
