ROSWELL, Ga. - Lorraine Ballerano, a rising senior on the NC State women's golf team, picked up two wins to advance to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the par 72 Settindown Creek course of Ansley Golf Club. The 38-seed in the 64-person match play bracket, Ballerano defeated No. 27 Alejandra Martin Del Campo 1 up in the round of 64 on Wednesday and then beat No. 59 Tiffany Lua 2 and 1 in the round of 32 Thursday morning before falling, 20 holes, to No. 11 Jenny Suh in the round of 16 Thursday afternoon.
Tying for first place in the July 6 qualifying round at Sapona Country Club in Lexington, N.C. with a 72, Ballerano qualified for the U.S. Am, along with teammate Molly Birmingham and incoming NC State freshman Lauren Doughtie. Ballerano, who hails from Myrtle Beach, S.C., shot five over-par to tie for 32nd place in the two rounds of stroke play earlier this week at the U.S. Am to make the cut for the 64-person match play bracket.
