NC State women's soccer plays host to College of Charleston on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m., in the SAS Soccer Park of Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack is fresh off a season opener victory after defeating High Point, 5-0 on Friday, Aug. 26. The home opener kicks off a five-game homestand, which includes the annual Summitt Hospitality Invitational set for Sept. 2-4. The Pack will welcome Elon, Delaware and Liberty.
Over the last two games NC State's freshmen have had quite a presence. Lindsay Vera has recorded two goals and one assist in that time. In addition, each of the freshmen, with the exception of Kasie Shover who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, have helped the Wolfpack offense. Mallory Schmidt posted a goal and assist in the High Point victory. Ashleah Dingle had a goal in the win and Tami Krzeszewski had an assist. Junior Carol Tognetti, who returns as the team's leading goal scorer from last season, recorded her first goal already - the game-winner over High Point. Senior Kim Selz received the starting nod at High Point and she, along with the Wolfpack defense held High Point without a shot in the first half. Junior Megan Connors entered the game in the second half and recorded one save. The Pack is currently ranked 12th in the southeastern region according to SoccerBuzz Magazine, joining the 14th regionally ranked College of Charleston. NC State leads the all-time series with the Cougars, 4-1.
Sunday's game against NC State will be the season opener for the Cougars. College of Charleston was voted to finish third in the Southern Conference. Senior forward Kristin Rhyne, who was a member of the all-conference first team in 2004, was the only Charleston player selected to the preseason all-conference team. Rhyne was second on the 2004 team with six goals. The Austin, Texas native led the Cougars in shots with 42 and assists with five. The Cougars, who are coming off a 12-5-2 campaign in 2004, which saw them set a school record for wins, recorded their first ever ranking at #14 in the Southeast. College of Charleston posted two wins in exhibition play, earning a 2-0 win over Campbell and a 2-1 win against Charlotte.
