NC State women's soccer picked up its first win of the season after a 3-1 exhibition victory at William & Mary on Saturday, Aug. 20. Freshman Lindsay Vera tallied a goal and assist to lead NC State, while juniors Nicole Mayo and Carol Tognetti also scored. Junior goalkeeper Megan Connors earned the win. She finished with two saves for the afternoon. The match was played using three, 30 minute periods, instead of the standard two, 45 minute halves. NC State opens its regular season slate this Friday at High Point, 7 p.m.
"This was a great win for us as we wrap up our preseason," said head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We started off a bit slow in the first 30 minutes but worked through some attacking issues and did a much better job in the last two periods."
An unusual goal from defender Nicole Mayo put NC State up on top 1-0 five minutes into the second period. The goal was the first for the Windsor, Conn. native. Forward Lindsay Vera provided the assist. The lead didn't last long however as William & Mary answered back two minutes later. Junior Anna Young utilized a corner kick opportunity and headed in the tying goal.
NC State and the Tribe remained tied until the final period when Carol Tognetti scored the game-winner in the 78th minute. The Wolfpack rallied around a corner that produced several rebounded shot attempts and Tognetti landed one of them into the net. Vera recorded NC State's final goal of the day with four minutes left. She placed a nice ball from 30 yards just left of center.
