Each year NC State student-athletes from each of the 23 teams come together to celebrate a new year as members of the Wolfpack family. The 2005 event, better known as the unity picnic, took place at Derr Track on Thursday, Aug. 18. NC State's Office for Student-Athlete Development is responsible for putting together such a great event. Tonya Washington, an assistant athletics director and director of the project, along with program coordinator Demar Bonnemere, worked together to assemble the music entertainment, catering and fun for NC State's student-athletes.
Each sport was well represented as the teams gathered to dine on hamburgers, watermelon and corn on the cob. The student-athletes also had an opportunity to spend some lighter moments of competition on a blown-up obstacle course and jousting arena. At times the competition was a little heated, but always fun. While volleyball put on the headgear and stepped up on the jousting stands, softball players lined up to race through the obstacle course and some of the men's basketball players gathered for a game of touch football.
As the preseason training schedule comes to a close within the next two weeks and as classes get into full swing, the picnic provided a relaxing couple of moments when grades weren't being calculated and scores not tallied. Good luck this season both on and off the field.
