Adeola Kosoko, a rising senior on the NC State volleyball team, has been selected by the Wolfpack's CHAMPS/Life Skills program to represent the NC State student-athletes at the NCAA Leadership Conference May 29-June 2 in Orlando, Fla.
The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day leadership conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group.
The conference is an outreach of the successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and involves close to 325 student-athletes each year who compete in fall, winter and spring sports in Divisions I, II and III. Many of the student-athletes who participate are members of their conference and campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs).
Criteria for selection include the student-athletes' demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes' potential to benefit significantly from a leadership development experience. College and university officials who have CHAMPS/Life Skills programs at their schools are encouraged to nominate student-athletes for the conference. Many of the participants selected for the leadership conference are also members of the student-athlete advisory committees (SAAC) in their athletic conference or on their campus. In order to be eligible for the leadership conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. A committee comprised of CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators from member institutions and NCAA student-athletes review the nominations to determine the final selections.
Kosoko is the current president of NC State's SAAC and is also on the leadership committee for the Wolfpack's Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Action group. The starting middle blocker on the volleyball team, Kosoko led the squad in attack percentage last season and is the top returning blocker this coming fall. A psychology major from Maryland, by way of Omaha, Neb., Kosoko is minoring in both biology and health, medicine, and human values.
"I am thrilled to be chosen to attend this conference," said Kosoko. "And out of the those nominated to go (Jennifer Filipowsiki, Kevin Avarette, Manny Lawson), I must say I am quite flattered, because I work with them all the time, and know that they are very capable, and hard workers. I've been fortunate to chance to attend a few conferences before, but never at this level. We are very fortunate at NC State, because we most often have many of the answers to questions that other institutions are still asking regarding Academic Support for student-athletes, CHAMPS/Life Skills, and even communicating with the Athletic Director. Even amongst other ACC institutions, I often find myself sharing how much we do at State and how effectively we do so. So, I look forward to sharing what NC State has already done, and bringing back new ideas for us to do in the future."
