RALEIGH, N.C. - Matt Devine and Ramon Corona hit home runs and three NC State pitchers combined on a five-hitter Saturday as NC State completed a doubleheader sweep of Florida State with an 8-3 victory. The victory gives NC State the three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series with the Noles, two games to one, and is the Wolfpack's seventh conference series win in a row. NC State won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the conclusion of a suspended game from Friday night, 7-4.
The win lifts the Pack to 39-15 overall and 17-13 in the ACC, a school record for conference victories in a season. Florida State, which lost back-to-back games for the first time since April 22-23, falls to 48-16, 19-11 in the ACC.
Senior righthander Phillip Davidson (6-3) picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Sam Walls. Davidson allowed one run on two hits, walked two and struck out three. Florida State starter Barrett Browning (4-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in one-plus innings.
The Wolfpack had seven different players drive in runs. Matt Camp, Ramon Corona, Aaron Bates, Aaron Cone and Matt Devine all had two hits each for the Pack. Shane Robinson went 3-for-5 for the Seminoles, accounting for 60 percent of their total of five base hits.
The Seminoles jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Robinson led off with a single up the middle and Ryne Malone singled to center to put runners on first and second. Gibbs Chapman laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Walls mishandled it for an error to load the bases with none out. Aaron Cheesman walked to drive in Robinson, and Jack Rye grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score Malone.
The Wolfpack came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Camp led off with an infield single. With one away, Bates singled up the middle to send Camp to third. Ryan Pond hit a double down the left-field line. Camp scored on the play and Bates went to third, but Pond had to leave the game with a leg injury. Lee Mezistrano pinch-ran for Pond, and Bates scored and Mezistrano went to third on a passed ball. Brian Aragon's two-out single to right field drove in Mezistrano to give the Wolfpack the lead at 3-2.
Devine led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer to right-center, his second of the season. Jonathan Diaz hit a fly ball to right, and Jack Rye tripped and fell as he went to make his jump on the ball, allowing the ball to fall and roll to the wall for a triple. Camp drove in Diaz with a bunt single, sending Browning to the showers and bringing Michael Hyde into the game. Corona singled through left side, but not before Camp got picked off first base for the first out of the inning. Bates then belted a double to right-center to drive in Corona all the way from first base and give the Wolfpack a 6-2 lead.
The Seminoles got one run back in the top of the sixth. Josh Spivey led off and walked, and Davidson hit Tony Thomas Jr. with a pitch to put runners on first and second with none out. Nick Francis struck out for the first out, but Robinson's blooper to left field fell in for a single to load the bases. Malone got Spivey home with a groundout, and Davidson got Chapman on a fly ball to right to end the threat with the Wolfpack still holding a 6-3 lead.
NC State got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Bates led off with a walk and pinch-hitter Ryan Johnson sacrificed him to second base. Cone followed by rolling a grounder up the middle and into a big gap in right-center for an RBI double that made it 7-3.
Corona led off the bottom of the eighth with a first-pitch homer off FSU relief ace Tyler Chambliss to make it 8-3. Prior to Saturday, Chambliss had not allowed an extra-base hit all season. Corona's home run was the Wolfpack's second long ball off Chambliss in as many pitches. Bates ended the first game of the doubleheader with a homer to center field.
The Wolfpack will head to Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday and will open play in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday.
