GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ashlee Dean was named to the 2005 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf team Monday, as selected by a vote of the league's eight head coaches. Dean, a senior from Hendersonville, N.C., becomes the first women's golfer in NC State history to earn All-ACC honors.
Leading the Wolfpack with a 76.5 strokes-per-18-holes average, Dean has four top 20 finishes this season, including a pair of top 10s. She placed ninth the last time out, the ACC Championship April 15-17 at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C., where Dean birdied three holes in the final round to pull NC State into a tie for third place.
The lone senior in the Wolfpack lineup this week at the NCAA East Regional Championship, Dean has the Wolfpack ranked 37th in the nation according to the last Golfweek poll and seeded 11th in the 21-team field at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship. The Pack is making its fourth straight trip to NCAA regionals and aiming to make the NCAA Championship cut for the first time ever.
Dean, who sank a hole-in-one Oct. 3 on the fifth hole of the Vanderbilt Legends Club, as part of the Mason Rudolph Classic in Nashville, Tenn., was already in the NC State record book for winning the 2004 Saguaro Classic in Tucson last spring. A transfer from UNC Greensboro in the fall 2003, Dean has played in every tournament but one since her arrival and if the season ended today she would break the school record for season stroke average and tie for fifth in school history with a 77.8 career stroke average.
Duke placed five individuals on the 12-member All-ACC squad. The Blue Devils' Brittany Lang was selected the ACC Player of the Year, while Duke's Jennifer Pandolfi was picked the ACC Freshman of the Year. Jan Mann, Virginia's head coach was chosen as the league's Coach of the Year.
