GREENVILLE, N.C. - Ryan Pond drilled a three-run home run and Andrew Brackman combined with Jason Duncan and Joey Devine on a five-hit shutout as NC State defeated East Carolina 3-0 Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The win was the third for the Wolfpack in four meetings with the Pirates this season and lifted NC State to 33-13 for the season. ECU fell to 28-20. Brackman (2-0), allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings of work. He threw 76 pitches before giving way to Duncan to start the sixth inning. In 12 innings against the Pirates this season, all in Greenville, Brackman has allowed no runs on four hits. Duncan pitched three hitless innings, and Devine pitched the ninth inning to record his 10th save of the season.
Devine becomes the first pitcher in NC State history to record 10 saves in three different season, and he is only the third pitcher in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference to have three seasons of 10 or more saves, joining Thad Chrismon (North Carolina, 1992-95) and Scott Winchester (Clemson, 1992-95). Devine now has 34 career saves and is tied for third in conference history with Winchester.
Redshirt freshman righthander Chris Powell (1-2) pitched into the eighth inning, but was victimized by a lack of run support. Powell allowed three runs on eight hits in seven-plus innings of work. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.
Ramon Corona was the Wolfpack's only hitter with more than one hit. He had a pair of singles in four at-bats.Adam Witter went 2-for-3 for the Pirates.
The Wolfpack scored the game's only three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Corona and Aaron Bates led off with ground-ball singles to right field, and Pond followed with a three-run opposite-field homer to right-center.
Brian Aragon made it four hits in a row with a single up the middle, but Powell settled down and retired nine of the next 10 Wolfpack hitters until Lee Mezistrano led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field. Chris Engle pinch-ran for Mezistrano, but was stranded at third base.
The Wolfpack did not need any further offense, however, thanks to Brackman, Duncan and Devine. Brackman retired the side in order only twice, but got out of trouble with three double-play grounders. He allowed two runners in an inning just once, and allowed just one runner to reach scoring position, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Duncan allowed two singles, but retired the last five men he faced. Devine gave up a two-out single to Witter in the ninth.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Wednesday afternoon against The Citadel at Doak Field. Game time will be 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on the internet on gopack.com. Live in-game stats will be available on gopack.com through the Gametracker.
