Smoke Breaks School Discus Record, Again

PHILADELPHIA - Kelly Smoke led a small contingent of the NC State outdoor track & field teams this weekend at the Penn Relays, by winning the discus throw with a regional-qualifying mark of 163-10, breaking the school record, which she set last week at the ACC Championships. Smoke, a senior from Durham, N.C., also competed in the hammer throw, posting a season-best mark of 159-0.
Ginger Wheeler took ninth place in the 5,000m with a regionally-qualifying time of 16:47.07 and Josianne Lauber shaved 14 seconds off her NCAA Championships Provisional Qualifying time in the 10,000m with a 34:33.15 for fifth place finish.
Mattie Bethea and Laila Thomas placed 12th and 13th respectively in the high jump at the Penn Relays while Dexter Adams reached 23-3 ¼ in the men's long jump for eighth place and Michael Hill posted a 47-11 ¼ in the triple jump for eighth place. Mitchell Pope regionally qualified again in the shot put, finishing ninth with a mark of 58-0 ¼ and John Henderson captured 12th in the steeplechase with a time of 9:18.59.
On Sunday Andy Smith and Renee Gunning led a group of Wolfpack distance runners at the Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Smith cracked 14 minutes in the 5,000m, running a NCAA Regional Championship qualifying time of 13:59.59, the best time in the ACC this season. Gunning placed ninth in the women's 5,000m, running a regional-qualifying time of 16:08.35, the second fastest time in the ACC this season behind teammate Julia Lucas.
Lucas posted another regional-qualifying time of 4:22.91 in the 1,500m Sunday, while Chris Kollar regionally-qualified in the men's 1,500m with a fifth place finish at 3:46.05, the ACC's second-fastest time this season. Magin Kebert ran another regional-qualifying time of 4:27.51 in the women's 1,500m, taking fifth place and Angelina Blackmon finished sixth with a 4:28.04, just missing the regional qualifying time in her first attempt in the event.
John Crews just missed the regional qualifying time in the men's 5,000m, finishing in 14:16.47 and Wesley Smith also competed in the 5K. Kristina Roth ran another regional-qualifying time in the women's steeplechase, nabbing 10th place with a 10:42.95.
