RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team dropped a very close 4-3 dual match to Furman Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Forced to play indoors because of gusty winds, the Wolfpack honored its four seniors in a ceremony that preceeded the six hour match.
The Paladins won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead going into singles play. Elin Stahl Johansson teammed with Carmen Torres to beat Furman's No. 3 doubles team 8-3 before rallying to beat Shannon Moore in three sets at No. 3 singles.
Barbara Orlay and Julia Roach made quick of their visiting singles opponents, as Orlay won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Roach picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Stahl Johansson's marathon match at No. 3 gave the Wolfpack a 3-2 lead as singles matches 2 and 5 began at the four-court facility. With a straight set win at No. 2, Furman tied the match 3-3.
In the deciding match at No. 5 singles, Agustina Avechavaleta and Furman's Marti Morris split the first two sets 6-4, 2-6 and Morris took the third, 6-4, to secure the 4-3 victory in favor of the Paladins.
