Smith Wins Third Straight Steeplechase Crown

Raleigh, N.C. - After two days of competition, the NC State men's track and field squad sits in sixth place with 24 points, while the women's team is in ninth place with 18 points at the 2005 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Florida State this weekend. Andy Smith won his third straight 3,000 meter steeplechase crown for the men, and the women's team had NCAA regional qualifiers in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 3,000 meter steeplechase in action Friday. Clemson was the leader after the first day for the men with 53 points, while Miami was the top women's squad with 57 points.
Andy Smith brought home his third straight 3,000 meter steeplechase title, and the sixth straight for NC State. Smith won the race in 8:38.90, less than three seconds off the ACC Championship record. John Henderson also scored for the Pack in that race, as he finished fifth in 9:03.62. Both Smith and Henderson ran NCAA regional qualifying times.
Chris Kollar qualified for the finals of the 1,500 meters, as he was 12th in the prelims with a time of 3:55.13. Also in that race, Bryce Ruiz was 18th (3:59.19). In the 100 meters, Brian Clark just missed advancing when he finished 10th with a time of 10.70. Also in that race, Matt Minnick was 24th (11.08) and Jimmie Sutton was right behind in 25th (11.10). In the 110 meter hurdles, Antwan Graves ran a 15.15 for 11th place, and he was also 10th in the 400 hurdles (55.21). In the 400 meters it was Omar Wells in 12th (49.00), Armand Quenum in 17th (50.13), and LT Dickens in 21st (51.78). Wells then turned in a 16th place showing in the 200 meters with his time of 22.08, while Minnick took 24th (22.78).
In the field events for the men's team, Michael Hill finished fifth in the high jump by clearing 6'08.75" and also 16th in the long jump with a top mark of 21'11". Dexter Adams was one of the scorers for the Pack, as he finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 23'04". In the discus, Mitchell Pope was 13th with a toss of 133'.
Kristina Roth had a strong showing for the Pack in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She finished fifth with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 10:29.54. Also in that race, Joanna Rodgers finished ninth in 11:06.23, and Leslie Jimison was 10th with her time of 11:10.18.
All-American Ebony Foster returned to the track after missing time with injuries and qualified for the finals of the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.56 to place fifth in the prelims. Foster's time also was a NCAA regional qualifying time. Foster just missed qualifying in the 200 meters by one spot, as she took ninth in the prelims with a time of 24.56. Also in the 200 meters, Joya Rodgers was 13th in 25.08, Trellanie Green was 16th (25.24), and Cassandra Williams was 23rd (26.08).
The NC State women's team also had two runners qualify for the finals of the 1,500 meters. Julia Lucas was the Pack's top finisher in the race, running a 4:30.39 for fourth. Magin Kebert will join Lucas in the finals, as she was eighth with a time of 4:31.81. The Pack also had four other runners in that race. Michele Popple finished 15th with her time of 4:39.12. Jessie Yester was 19th in 4:42.72, and close behind was Kelly Brown in 20th place (4:42.94). Jen Boyd ran the race in 4:45.69 for 22nd place.
Angelina Blackmon made it into the 800 meter finals, she was eighth in the prelims with her time of 2:09.86. Joya Rodgers also qualified for the finals tomorrow, as she placed eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.91. Cassandra Williams finished 19th (12.55) in that same race. Trellanie Green finished 16th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.75.
Teresa Reed finished 12th in the pole vault by clearing 11'03.75". Kelly Smoke finished 14th in the shot put with a toss of 44'11".
The ACC Championships will resume tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m with the field events, while the running events begin at 1:00 p.m. All results are posted online as soon as the events are finished at www.flashresults.com.
