NEW LONDON, N.C. - The NC State men's golf team improved six strokes in the second round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship Saturday to move past Clemson into third place with 18 holes to go at the par 72 Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. Jerry Richardson shot one-over-par for the second straight day and is tied for sixth at two-over. Banks Wood led the Wolfpack with an even par second round and is tied for eighth place at three-over.
Richardson birdied four holes on the day. On the seventh hole, a downhill par 3 in a canyon formed around a cove of Badin Lake, Richardson drained a birdie putt against unrelenting winds. Three-under with three holes left, Richardson bogeyed or double-bogeyed his last three to come in one-over.
"I played pretty good for 15 holes," said Richardson. "It was a really good day, but it was a tough finish. Our team is in a good position to come in tomorrow, play good and be right in it."
Georgia Tech caught first round leader, Duke, with a two-over second round and they are now tied for the lead going into the final round of the three-day, 54-hole, 10-team tournament featuring four top-40 squads. NC State trails the Yellow Jackets and the Blue Devils by nine strokes.
"We played pretty solid," said NC State head coach Richard Sykes. "All five guys did well today and we needed all five to do that. We have struggled all spring and in these last two or three weeks we have finally started playing like we are capable of playing. Jerry (Richardson) is probably mad about the way he finished today, but he shot a 73. Yesterday he birdied holes 17 and 18 to finish with a 73 and he was happy as could be. Today he shoots the same score, but doesn't do well on the last three and he looks like somebody shot his dog."
Taylor Crosby bounced back to form in the second round, carding a 73, moving into a tie for 28th place at 10-over. Stephen Lewton and Garry Hill both fired three-over in round two. Lewton is five-over and tied for 13th while Hill is eight-over and tied for 21st.
The ACC Championship concludes Sunday with a final round of 18 holes. Complete results and live scoring are available at www.golfstat.com.
