Lucas Regionally Qualifies In the 5K

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Andy Smith was the first collegian to cross the finish line in the 3,000m steeplechase this weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. The 2004 NCAA runner-up in the event, ran a NCAA Regional Championship qualifying time of 8:36.70. Julia Lucas was the third collegian to finish the 5,000m and regionally qualified with a time of 15:53.47 and the rest of the NC State track & field team competed at the UNC Fast Times Meet as a final tune-up before the ACC Championships next weekend.
Mitchell Pope hit a regionally qualifying mark in the shot put again, taking second place with a mark of 57-1 1/2. Pope also took second in the discus throw with a mark of 155-11, third in the hammer throw with a heave of 161-10 and he also placed seventh in the javelin throw. Chris Crawford posted top-seven finishes in the discus, shot and hammer as well.
Michael Hill won the triple jump with a mark of 47-3 3/4, he cleared 6-3 1/2 in the high jump to place second and he took sixth place in the long jump at 22-1 3/4. Eric Hoverstad was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 15-5 and Dexter Adams was the runner-up in the long jump, reaching 23-4 1/5.
Omar Wells ran a 49.95 in the 400m to finish eighth and he took 11th in the 200m with a time of 22.27. Matt Minnick ran a 11.09 in the 100m and a 22.96 in the 200m to finish in the top-20 of both events. Armand Quenum posted a 50.54 for 11th place in the 400m and LT Dickens also competed in the 400m. Antwan Graves captured seventh place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.30.
Phillip Stafford raced to a ninth place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:07.26 and Lance Hall also competed in the event.
On the women's side, jumpers Mattie Bethea, Laila Thomas, Teresa Reed and Tabitha Woodard all competed Friday at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and then returned home to take part in Saturday's action at the UNC Fast Times Meet. Bethea tied for 10th place in the high jump at the Sea Ray Relays, clearing 5-7 and Thomas cleared 5-5 to tie for 11th. Reed cleared 11-5 3/4 in the pole vault to tie for 15th and Woodard cleared 10-11 3/4. The next day in Chapel Hill, Woodard placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing 11-5.75, while Thomas reached 17-1 1/4 in the long jump for 7th place and Bethea took eighth with a leap of 17-0. Thomas and Bethea also tried the javelin throw at UNC in preperation for future heptathlon competition.
Kelly Smoke won the discus throw with a mark of 146-9 and posted third place finishes in both the hammer throw (168-4) and the shot put (45-1 1/2). Brie Ward took third place in the discus with a throw of 124-11 and she tossed a personal best 151-3 in the hammer for sixth place. Charlotte Diguid also competed in the high jump for the Wolfpack.
Michelle Popple led a pack of runners for NC State in the 1500m, taking second place with a time of 4:41.03. Jennifer Boyd (4:41.60), Sara Powell (4:45.67), Kelly Brown (4:47.54), Jessie Yester (4:47.54) and Georgia Davis (4:48.68) all finished in the top ten.
Trellanie Green placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 58.50 and posted a sixth place finish in the 200m with a time of 25.44. Joya Rodgers ran a 25.67 in the 200m for eighth place and a 12.04 to take second in the 100m. Cassandra Williams nabbed a seventh place in the 100m and posted a top 20 finish in the 200m. Tajaron Lewis came in 10th in the 400m.
