
Wolfpack Women's Tennis Downs Virginia Tech, 5-2

Blacksburg, Va. - On Sunday, April 10, the NC State women's tennis team collected a solid Atlantic Coast Conference victory over newly enlisted ACC foe Virginia Tech, 5-2, in Blacksburg, Va. The Pack grabbed the doubles point early on, then earned four singles wins in straight sets to wrap up its first conference win of the season. The Wolfpack netters now stand at 9-11 (1-7 ACC) on the season, while the Hokies slip to 7-15 (0-10 ACC).
The No. 75 red and white blazed through doubles competition to start the day, sweeping all three matches to gain the early momentum in the match. Junior Barbara Orlay and freshman Julia Roach, making their debut as a duo together, took down Anat Elazari and Bethan James, 8-6. Sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta and senior Danielle Stadelmann followed with a win of their own, 8-3, over Ashley James and Kate Harrington. Senior Carmen Torres and freshman Elin Stahl Johansson, also making their first appearance as a doubles pair, wrapped up team action with a win over Julia Facchina and Meredith Holmes, 8-5.
With the early 1-0 lead, NC State stumbled at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots. Orlay fell to No. 119 Elazari, 7-6. Junior Virginia Romero then lost to Ashley James, 6-3, 6-0. Johansson bounced the Pack back at the No. 3 spot, with a straight set win over Bethan James, 6-1, 6-3.
Johansson's two-set win was the first of four for the Pack in singles action, as NC State clinched the match with wins in the remaining three seeds. At No. 4, Roach took down Harrington, 6-1, 6-2. Stadelmann then defeated Holmes, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5. Arechavaleta ended the day with her second straight singles bout victory, besting Facchina, 6-0, 6-1, in the sixth spot.
NC State will close out its regular season with two tough conference road matches at No. 61 Maryland and Virginia. The red and white will then compete at the ACC Tournament, which is being held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., April 21-24.
