Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team is currently going through its spring season. The Wolfpack has been in the weight room, on the practice field and this weekend will start its spring schedule with a scrimmage at Duke. Jorge Gonzalez won All-ACC first-team honors last year, and will be looked upon to be a leader for his season season. Gonzalez recently sat down with GoPack.com to talk the past few months.
On last years team: I Think we had a good season last year. We stepped up against some really good teams especially in ACC play. We beat Duke when they were ranked sixth nationally, and also tied Maryland when they were ranked second. Those results show us we can play against the nationally ranked teams, we just have to be more consistent.
On being named to the All-ACC first-team last year: I'll be honest I was a bit surprised to be named All-ACC. There are a lot of good goalies in this conference, some of the best in the nation. I was flattered to be honored, because I know it is something every goalie strives for when they decide to come to an ACC school. It actually serves as great motivation for next year because I would love to be recognized again and the only way to do that is to work hard in the offseason.
On what he has been doing since last season: I've been working out trying to get back in shape. We've been in the weight room and just recently we started to go back outside and have practice. During both the spring and summer I'm going to give lots of effort and work hard, because it's my last year here at NC State and I really want to make it special.
On the importance of a spring season: This spring season will really help us as a team for the fall. We have a good schedule of scrimmages lined up, all against teams that seem to be in the national rankings each year. We have to use this time to go out and play hard and come together as a team. Even though not everybody on the fall roster is out there, the players here now going though practice are the core of the team.
On facing Duke in a scrimmage this weekend: I know its a friendly, but whenever you are playing an ACC team you always want to win. We need to go over to their place and play hard as a team.
