Raleigh, N.C. - Based off two strong meets this past weekend, the NC State gymnastics team swept the EAGL weekly awards. Junior Kylah Bachman was named co-EAGL Gymnast of the Week, sophomore Rachel Katz was the EAGL Specialist of the Week, and freshman Leigha Hancock is the EAGL Rookie of the Week. The Wolfpack (11-3-1) scored its highest team score of the season at North Carolina on Sunday, a 195.500, and actually recorded the programs first ever tie in a home meet against UNC Friday night.
Bachman scored over a 39.000 in the all-around in both meets. In Friday's home meet, she scored a season-high 39.325 for the win. She also won beam with a 9.875, and won her first career title on vault with a 9.85. At UNC on Sunday, Bachman finished second with her score of 39.175 in the all-around. She also won beam once again, with an identical 9.875 score, and has now won beam each of the past three meets.
Katz earned her first specialist of the week honor, adding to her one she got last year as a freshman. Katz competed on vault, bars and floor in both meets for the Pack. He scored a 9.8 twice on vault for two top-three finishes, and had a 9.8 and a 9.85 on floor to be one of the Pack's top floor performers of the weekend.
Hancock is the second NC State freshman to win rookie of the week honors this season, as teammate Heather Zolton has already been named twice. Competing on vault, beam and floor in both meets, Hancock scored at least a 9.8 on five of her six routines, and scored no lower than a 9.7. Hancock posted two second place showings and three third place finishes, and set a new career-high on vault.
NC State is at No. 8 Georgia this weekend, then at California for a meet on March 11.
