RALEIGH, N.C. - Bryan Kinneberg broke a 1-1 tie with a one-out single in the bottom of the third inning, and three NC State pitchers combined on a six-hitter Sunday to lead the Wolfpack to a 3-1 victory over Delaware State in the final game of a three-game series at Doak Field.
The victory was head coach Elliott Avent's 300th in his eight-plus seasons at NC State. Avent's record now stands at 300-193. He becomes the third baseball coach in school history to reach the 300-win plateau, following Sam Esposito (513-253 from 1967-87) and Ray Tanner (395-173 from 1988-96).
NC State won all three games of the series to improve to 3-0 for the season. Delaware State dropped to 0-3. After the Wolfpack won by routs on Friday and Saturday, 18-3 and 15-1, the pitchers dominated the game on Sunday. Sophomore righthander Jeff Stallings (1-0) gave NC State its third solid performance from a starting pitcher in as many games to get his first decision of the season. He pitched six innings and allowed just one run on six hits. He walked two, both in the second inning, struck out six, and retired 10 of the final 12 men he faced. Adam McLaurin tossed a scoreless inning, and Joey Devine worked the final two innings, overpowering the Hornets and retiring all six men he faced to get his first save of the year. Devine struck out the final five Delaware State hitters of the game.
Delaware State starter Chase Korneman (0-1) was nearly as effective as Stallings, but took the loss. He yielded three runs on six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out one. He recorded just one 1-2-3 inning, but stranded four runners in scoring position. William Keyes, Ryan Shaw and Kevin Long followed Korneman to the mound without allowing a run.
Kinneberg led the NC State attack with two hits in three at-bats, and Aaron Bates and Brian Aragon had two hits apiece. Matt Folke had two hits in four at-bats for Delaware State.
The Hornets took their first lead of the series with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Wenger and Curtis Lovelle walked, and C.J. Acker singled to shallow right field to load the bases. Jared Lineweaver, Delaware State's hottest hitter in the first two games of the series, rolled a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Wenger. Kevin Hill lined out to second for the second out of the inning, and Stallings struck out Norris Gordon on a nifty breaking pitch to end the inning.
The Wolfpack tied the game at a run apiece in the bottom of the second when Jake Muyco drove a two-out double to center field, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Aragon's single up the middle.
Matt Devine led off the bottom of the third and was hit by a pitch. Jonathan Diaz followed with a perfect bunt up the first-base line to put runners on first and second with none out. Matt Camp sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Kinneberg followed with a two-run single up the middle.
NC State will return to action on Friday, February 10, at Campbell. Game time will be at 2 p.m. The Wolfpack and Camels will play at Doak Field on Saturday, February 11, also at 2 p.m.
