BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Former NC State infielder Tim Holt belted a three-run home run to cap a five-run inning Friday as Campbell defeated NC State in college baseball action at Taylor Field. The game was the season opener for the Camels, who are 1-0 with the victory. NC State lost for the first time this season and dropped to 3-1.
Camels reliever Lincoln Smith picked up the win with four shutout innings of relief. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two. NC State starter Phil Davidson pitched well enough to win most games, but was hurt by his own costly error. Davidson pitched six innings, allowing six runs, all unearned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out three.
The second inning was the killer for the Wolfpack. Jeff Randol led off with a single to right field for Campbell and Luke Reiland walked. Matt Marek flied to center field for the first out, and Justin Phillips popped up the first pitch he saw for the second out of the inning. Jeff Blick tried to bunt for a hit, but bunted right back to Davidson just to the left of the mound. Davidson pounced on the ball, but threw the ball wildly past first baseman Aaron Bates. Randol and Reiland scored on the play, and Blick wound up on second. Davidson ccompounded his mistake by walking Joe Anthonsen, and then serving up a wind-aided three-run homer to former Wolfpack infielder Tim Holt. That stunning blast gave the Camels a 5-0 lead.
The Wolfpack, which stranded six batters and had one runner gunned down at home plate, got its only run in the top of the fifth. Jonathan Diaz, Matt Camp and Bryan Kinneberg drew walks to load the bases with none out. Righthander Lincoln Smith came in to pitch for Campbell and Bates flied to deep center field to drive in Diaz and make it 5-1. Mike Jensen popped up for the second out, however, and Camp was called out at home trying to advance on a ball that got away from the catcher.
The Camels got that back in the bottom of the sixth. Randol led off with a double to right and took second on Reiland's fly ball to right. Marek then hit a fly to right-center that Lee Mezistrano misplayed for an error, allowing the unearned run to score and give Campbell a 6-1 lead.
The sixth inning was as far as Davidson went, but the Camels were not finished. Anthonsen drew a one-out walk from reliever Alan Letchworth in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored all the way from first on Mike Priest's two-out double to the left-center-field gap. That made it 7-1, and the Camels added two more in the bottom of the eighth. Reiland led off with an infield single and stole second. Marek followed with another infield single to put runners on the corners with none out. Justin Phillips drove a single off Letchworth's foot to drive in one run, and Anthonsen hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Marek, making it 9-1.
The two teams will resume the two-game home-and-home series on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Doak Field. Live stats will be available on the internet through the Gametracker on gopack.com.
