Hill Wins Triple Jump At Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NC State indoor track & field teams competed Saturday at UNC"s Carolina Classic. Michael Hill (Jr., Marion County, N.C.) won the triple jump with a career best mark of 49-5 1/2, cleared a carer best 6-6 3/4 in the high jump to place third and then reached a career best 22-6 1/4 in the long jump.
Dexter Adams (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) was the runner-up in the long jump, reaching 23-7 1/2. Mitchell Pope (So., Hickory, N.C.) tied a career record in the shot put, reaching 56-1 and placing fourth. Pope also finished eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 49-4 1/4. Chris Crawford (So., Jacksonville, N.C.) shattered his career record in the shot put with a throw of 50-7 1/2 for eighth place. Crawford also placed eighth in the weight throw with a career best mark of 54-1 3/4.
Brian Clark (Jr., Tampa Fla.), Miguel Scott (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Jimmie Sutton, III (R-Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) all qualified for the finals of the 60m. Clark took 12th place in the finals with a time of 6.99, Scott ran it in 7.02 and Sutton came in at 7.06.
DaJuan Morgan (Fr., Riveria Beach, Fla.), Adams, Matt Minnick (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) and LT Dickens (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) all finished in the top 25 of the 200m. Morgan ran a 23.15, Adams a 23.17, Minnick a 23.30 and Dickens was clocked at 23.32.
Kevin Davis (So., Southfield, Mich.) recorded a fifth place finish in the 400m with a time of 50.33. Omar Wells (So., Durham, N.C.), Dickens, Armand Quenum (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) and Antwan Graves (So., Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out top 20 finishes in the 400m as well.
Bryce Ruiz (R-So., Williamsburg, Va.) ran the mile in 4:20.08, which earned a 10th place finish. Colin Cronin (R-So., Winston-Salem, N.C.), Patrick Chessar (So., Spokane, Wash.) and Nick Rizzon (Fr., Bradford, N.Y.) rattled off top 15 finishes in the 3,000m with times of 8:52.40, 8:55.39 and 9:02.66 respectively.
Antwan Graves qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles, where he finished 11th with a time of 8.43.
On the women's side, Courtney Patterson (So., Fayetteville, N.C.) ran the Wolfpack's fastest time of the season in the 60m preliminary with a 7.60 and then shaved three hundredths of a second off in the finals to take fifth place. Joya Rodgers (So., Charlotte, N.C.) finished eighth with a 7.66.
Cassandra Williams (Fr., Selma, N.C.) ran her best time of the season in the 200m, recording a 27.07, while fellow freshman Tajaron Lewis ran her collegiate best time of 1:03.77 in the 400m.
Leslie Jimison (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:07.63, Michelle Popple (Fr., Wake Forest, N.C.) came in 10th place at 5:14.54, Jessie Yester (R-Fr., Downington, Pa.) took 12th with a 5:16.55 and Joanna Rodgers (R-Fr., Fairfax, Va.) ran a 5:17.94 for 13th place.
Angelina Blackmon (Fr., Rock Hill, S.C.) ran the 3,000m in 9:59.83 for ninth place. Jennifer Boyd (R-Fr., Chesapeake, Va.), Kelly Brown (So., Alexandria, Va.) and Lee Ann Wheatley finished 11th (10:07.79), 12th (10:16.84) and 13th (10:18.06) respectively.
Laila Thomas (So., Jacksonville, N.C.) cleared 5-4 1/4 in the high jump to tie for fifth place and reached 15-2 3/4 in the long jump.
Kelly Smoke (Sr., Durham, N.C.) threw a 40-10 1/4 in the shot put to finish eighth. Whitney McGee (So., Marshville, N.C.) placed 13th in the weight throw with a mark of 46-4 3/4 and Brie Ward (So., Stafford, Va.) threw for 45-4 1/4.
Ebony Foster (Jr., Lynchburg, Va.) competed unattached in the 60m hurdles and finished second with a 8.33, which would provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
NC State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Virginia Tech Challenge.
