RALEIGH, NC - Abbie Sims improved to 2-0 after shutting down Louisiana Tech, 4-0, in the day two opener for NC State (3-0) at the Bulldog Round Robin. Sims tied a MSU Softball Field record with 14 strikeouts, and she allowed only two hits, both bloop singles to left, and just three walks. Between the end of the first and the end of the third inning, Sims struck out seven of the eight batters she faced. Jen Chamberlin and Lisa Nentwig each went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Wolfpack offense.
NC State jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a lead off single by Nentwig to right center in the bottom of the third inning. Renee LaCroix laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Nentwig to second. Harkey struck out, but La Tech catcher Echols dropped the third strike, and threw the ball away for an error as Nentwig scored from second. Heather Gelbard followed with a double to the left field wall to score Harkey for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead.
The lead would blossom to 3-0 in the fourth after Chamberlin lead off with a single up the middle, and Laura Klem came into run. Shanna Smith laid down the bunt to advance Klem to second, and Sims ripped a RBI double into left field.
The Wolfpack would extend the lead in the sixth, as Chamberlin doubled and was brought in later in the inning from third on a sacrifice fly by Sims.
NC State will play Mississippi State later today at 4 pm.
