Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team had one interesting weekend. The Pack had a rare two-meet weekend, competing against North Carolina both at home, and then two days later at UNC. The two teams tied on Friday night, then on Sunday NC State recorded its top team score of the season. The strong weekend performances helped push the Pack to No. 25 in the national rankings. Assistant coach Todd Henry has more in this weeks Inside the Chalk Box.
Henry: We will call it the `Carolina Weekend'! It was very exciting weekend of college gymnastics. We had a home meet against North Carolina this past Friday, which actually ended in a tie! It is almost unheard of in gymnastics, and in fact this was the first tie in the program's 25-year history. For all intent, it is so rare that there is no tiebreaker!
NC State then went to their house on Sunday and beat our archrival with a season-high 195.500! We were hitting on all cylinders and had our best meet of this season. We have moved up again in the rankings, and are now in the top 25! We are currently ranked 25th in the national polls.
The kids are responding to more difficult training and expectations. There is a lot of green left to play however. This coming weekend we travel to No. 8 Georgia. It will be a tough test for our girls. Georgia is a five-time NCAA Championship team and they average around 8,000 fans per home meet! We have already told the team that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by throwing caution to the wind for this one. It will be a tall order, but why not try?
We are moving towards the EAGL conference (which we host) and regional championship. NC State is in a good position for the last part of the season to put on a good show for those two big meets. We will see! Until next time.........Go Pack!!
