Smoke Takes Sixth In Weight Throw At ACC Indoors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships got underway Thursday afternoon at the UNC Indoor Track & Field. NC State only had six athletes competing in the first day's events, but several career records were broken and the Wolfpack scored points on both the men's and women's sides.
Kelly Smoke (Sr., Durham, N.C.) and Chris Crawford (So., Jacksonville, N.C.) placed sixth in the weight throw, earning three points for their respective teams. Crawford threw a career best 56-5 3/4 with the men's 35-pound weight and Smoke's best toss was 59-10 1/2 with the women's 20-pound weight. Mitchell Pope (So., Hudson, N.C.) placed 12th with a throw of 50-7 1/4, while Brie Ward (So., Stafford, Va.) finished 14th with a career best 48-11 3/4 and Whitney McGee (So., Marshville, N.C.) took 18th place with a mark of 45-10 1/2.
Laila Thomas (So., Jacksonville, N.C.) took 11th place in the pentathlon with a score of 3,030. Her best event was the high jump, in which she tied for first in with a career-best leap of 5-5 3/4. Thomas finished ninth in the long jump with a mark of 16-11 1/4, 13th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.83 and 14th in both the 800m (2:51.56) and the shot put (27-1 3/4).
After one event, the NC State men are in sixth place with three points and after two events, the Wolfpack women are in seventh with three points. The ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships resume Friday at noon and conclude Saturday.
