Raleigh, N.C. - What a weekend for the NC State gymnastics team. The Pack hosted the annual Hearts Invite and came away with its highest score of the season, thanks in large part to a huge crowd that was vocal throughout the meet. The Pack finally got thing going on beam, and the result was the highest team score of any event this year. Coach Henry gives his impression of the meet, and now you can start to check out the Inside the Chalkbox column on the gymnastics page for all of Coach Henry's team updates.
Henry: As promised, NC State is getting better every week. We had our big Hearts Invitational over the weekend against Iowa, William & Mary and George Washington. We were fortunate enough to win at home in front of 2,000 rowdy Wolfpack supporters, including our own football coach, Chuck Amato! We thank everybody for coming out and supporting our team.
We scored our highest total of the year, a 195.400. Iowa was second with 193.925, followed by George Washington (193.475) and William & Mary (188.250). Needless to say this was a big win for us and a score he are very proud of.
We have had three strong events all year, but have come up short in every meet on beam. Not this time! We scored the highest event total of the 2005 season on any event on beam this time. Our kids were rock solid. We are a good beam team, but we have had a confidence problem. This shot in the arm will surely help.
Congrats to Andrea Petrocelli, who scored a career-high 9.9 on beam. She was first up, which means that it is difficult to get that kind of score. The judges usually reserve a 9.9 for the later kids. Another thumbs up goes to Kylah Bachman who has struggles this year on beam, but pulled out all the stops this week. Kelsey Lee, who almost did not make the bar line-up last week, has busted out two super sets in a row. She unveiled her new double layout dismount on bars and stuck it cold!
Here comes the Wolfpack! We are moving up in the rankings each week. After out performance over the weekend, NC State is ranked 30th in the country and fourth in our region. Our goal this year is to close the season being in the top-25 when all the dust settles.
Until next time ... Go Pack! We will see you after our trip to EAGL rival New Hampshire.
