Raleigh, N.C. - `Inside the Chalk Box' features a guest columnist this week, junior Crisann Calvo. Last season, Calvo came back strong after missing her entire freshman season due to injury. Calvo saw action on bars and floor, and will be vying for a spot in the Wolfpack lineup this upcoming season. Calvo recently reported on the Pack's recent intrasquad meet.
Calvo: This past Friday we held our second intrasquad of the year, and it went surprisingly well for this early in the season. It seemed almost as if we already have a few meets under our belt. We started off with one of our best looking vault teams we've had in the last two years. Everyone stood up their vaults including a handful of solid layout yerchenko fulls, one of which was stuck by Heather Zolton and an awesome pike front half by Dru Davis.
Next was bars which also turned out great for this time of the year. Starting off with a solid leader, Rachel Katz and continuing through Kelsey Lee's enormous release and Amanda Jones's stuck double layout dismount.
Beam didn't go as smoothly as the first two events but over all, the routines have improved since the last intrasquad. Leigha Hancock and Kylah Bachman pulled off great rock-solid routines and freshman Ashley Sheppard fought through her routine to stay on which helped move her a little closer to the beam line up.
Floor looked above average for this time of the year as did vault and bars, with some new amazing skills thrown in the mix. An arabian double front by Dru Davis and a double layout by Kelsey Lee along with a piked full-in from Leigha Hancock. Although not all of our passes were made perfectly, we look to be in fairly good shape as of now.
We ended up with a score of 194, leaving us feeling confident that we are headed in the right direction. With the top six looking as good as they did on each event and plenty of girls to back them up, we're off to an excellent start to what seems to be looking like a very promising year.
