Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team will face North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. This years tournament will be held at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack (11-5-1) finished the ACC regualr season in third place with a record of 4-3-1, its first winning record in conference play since 1997. NC State and the No. 6 seeded Tar Heels (13-3-2) will meet for the third straight year in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. In 2003 NC State advanced past UNC on penalty kicks after the two teams went scoreless for 110 minutes, and last season the Tar Heels won 2-0.
Earlier this year, the two squads battled to a 2-2 tie at SAS Soccer Park in one of the most excited contests of the year in college soccer. After a scoreless first half, the scoring picked up. The Pack opened up the scoring with a goal by Aaron King in the 77th minute. The Tar Heels came back and matched that goal with a penalty kick by Ben Hunter in the 84th minute. Just as the game was a minute from overtime, both teams ended up finding the back of the net once more. First it was Hunter with a free kick with 56 seconds left, only to be matched by a goal from NC State's El Hadj Cisse with less than a second to play. After 20 more minutes, 110 minutes overall, the game ended 2-2 in the conference opener for both teams.
The winner of the NCSU/UNC game will face the winner of the Virginia/Clemson on Friday at 8:00 p.m. The championships game will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
