The NC State volleyball team lost 3-0 Tuesday night to North Carolina at Carmichael Auditorium. Adeola Kosoko led the Wolfpack (7-15, 1-13 ACC) with seven kills, six digs and four blocks, but the Tar Heels (17-7, 12-2) held NC State to a season low team attack percentage of .015, sweeping the match 30-25, 30-26, 30-20.
"The stats show that we hung in there without a good hitting percentage," said NC State head coach Mary Byrne. "We're used to Stefani Eddins and Adeola (Kosoko) hitting four or five hundred (percent) and that wasn't there tonight and nobody picked up the slack. We just didn't finish, which was disappointing because we lost our composure at the end of each game."
The Wolfpack played hard, staying with the Tar Heels through the fist half of game one until North Carolina went on a 10-4 run to leave NC State behind 23-17 and out of reach. Trading points throughout the second game the Wolfpack took a four-point lead at 23-19 before the Tar Heels rallied with an 11-3 to win the game. After a 9-9 tie in game three, North Carolina never relinquished the lead and rolled to victory, tearing off a 11-5 run to a 20-14 advantage and then a 8-2 run to close out the match.
Karlie Urbaniak added seven kills and a pair of blocks for the Wolfpack while Aiwane Iboaya hit a team best .333 with six kills. Melissa Rabe had 13 assists and Lyssa Ramirez came off the bench to provide NC State with 13 assists, a kill and two blocks, including a solo stuff for the 5-6 setter. Andrea Bentley led the team with 24 digs and Kelley Blakewood came up with 11. Stefani Eddins and Ashley Wallace had four blocks each for the Pack.
NC State returns home this weekend to host Wake Forest, Friday at 7:00 p.m., and Duke on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
