Raleigh, N.C. - With what seems months away is actually right around the corner. The NC State gymnastics team does not have its first meet until January, but everything is in full swing in the practice gym. Assistant coach Todd Henry sat down recently to share his thoughts on how practice is going, and giving some updates about some of NC State's gymnasts.
Coach Henry: As the season moves closer, the team is really stepping up. We have had several intrasquad workouts and the results have been strong. On vault, NC State will compete six or seven 10.0 start value vaults. This is really important in college gymnastics. It is very difficult to create power if the athlete does not have that natural ability coming into school.
On floor, State will have some new elements to showcase. Kelsey Lee will compete a double layout mount. Leigha Hancock will open with a piked full twisting double back and Heather Zolton will compete a handspring double twisting front to immediate punch front. Freshman Ashley Shepard has a unique second pass. She does a roundoff whip back immediate back flip with twist to a front full. Go ASHLEY!! Those are just some highlights of what NC State plans to put on floor.
On bars, Coach Stevenson feels strongly that our team will have six solid routines. Senior Kylah Bachman is working on a slip grip giant to front sal to release move. This will be pretty cool if she can get a bit more consistent. Our goal this year, as with every team is to make no mistakes. NC State was strong on bars this past season but we struggled with different line-ups. We could not find the magic formula!
Balance beam will again be solid for the Wolfpack. We graduated two extremely talented gymnast on beam but Karen feels she will be able to teach the younger athletes comparable exercise.
Until next time....
Coach Todd
