RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer will host Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m., at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack is 5-7-0 and 1-3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Hokies enter the match with an overall record of 5-7-1 and 1-4-0 in ACC action. VT fell to Clemson, 1-0 on Thursday night, while the Pack also dropped a 1-0 match on the road at Wake Forest. NC State leads the all-time series, 2-1. The match versus Virginia Tech is the first of three final home games for NC State in the 2005 season. The Wolfpack will host Boston College and Clemson in the final two.
The Pack faced its third Top-ranked team in three weeks when it traveled to No. 8 Wake Forest on Thursday, Oct. 6. NC State fell 1-0 for the fifth time this season and for the second time in three matches. With that said, NC State is playing great defense, keeping opponents from scoring, but its offense has to score to win. The Pack finished with just two shots on goal at Wake Forest and six shots overall. NC State's last goal was against then No. 8 Florida State, scored by freshman Lindsay Vera. Vera has three goals on the year and three assists which ties her for a team-best nine points. Junior Carol Tognetti also has nine points, coming off of four goals and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz, who has posted five or more saves in six matches this season, which includes her six stops versus Wake Forest, has anchored the Pack's defense. She has 44 saves and eight goals allowed in her 11 games played. NC State has given up just 11 goals this season, which is the fewest in head coach Laura Kerrigan's eight seasons. The Wolfpack has not given up as few goals since 2000 when only 20 were tallied.
Virginia Tech has lost five of its last six matches, with the only win coming against Miami, 5-0, on Sept. 29. Since then the Hokies have fallen to No. 8 Florida State, 3-0 and Clemson 1-0. VT is led by sophomore forward Ashley Stinson, who has three goals and one assist on the year. Four others have two goals. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Owens has received the starting nod in 11 of her 12 appearances. She has 55 saves and 16 goals allowed to her credit. Virginia Tech has been outscored 11-5 in the last six games and 4-0 in the last two.
The last meeting with Virginia Tech was on Oct. 3, 2004, in Raleigh. NC State lost 1-0, in VT's first year in the conference. The three matches prior to Sunday's meeting have been played in the Kerrigan era. NC State posted back-to-back victories over the Hokies in 1998 and 1999. The Wolfpack won 4-1 on Sept. 1, 1998 and then 2-1 on Oct. 6, 1999.
