The NC State volleyball team travels north this weekend for a pair of ACC road matches. The Wolfpack (6-11, 0-9 ACC) enters Power Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, Mass., Friday night for the first-ever meeting between Boston College (8-7, 3-4 ACC) and NC State at 8:00 p.m. The Pack will then take on league leaders, Maryland (10-6, 6-1 ACC), in College Park, Md., Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., in the Comcast Center Pavilion.
Stefani Eddins, one of the two starting middle blockers for the Wolfpack, leads the ACC and is ranked 10th nationally with a .425 attack percentage on the season. The senior co-captain from Irving, Texas also leads the team with 85 blocks and 222 kills this year. Eddins set a career high with 23 kills in the heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Clemson last Friday hitting .386 on the night with five blocks and then blistered Georgia Tech on Saturday evening with a .536 attack pct., 17 kills and five blocks as NC State fell 3-1 to the Yellow Jackets. She led the ACC in blocks per game last year and ranks among the league leaders in that category again, as Eddins aims to break her own single season school record, set a year ago. Blocking, in addition to Eddins' increased offensive output, and more importantly her accuracy, is what makes her one of the premier players in the ACC.
Adeola Kosoko, one of the two starting middle blockers for the Wolfpack, cracked the top ten in the school records last week for career blocks. The senior co-captain from Glendale, Md., by way of Omaha, Neb., has 295 total blocks and only trails eighth place Laura Kimbrell (1995-98) by three. Kosoko turned in another solid weekend against Clemson and Georgia Tech last week, with 11 kills, a .226 hit pct., six digs, three blocks and one ace performance against the Tigers, followed by 16 kills, a .424 hit pct., seven digs and five block performance against the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman defensive specialist Shawn Carroll made her collegiate debut last week against Clemson. The College Park, Ga., native missed the first half of the season while recovering from surgery over the summer to correct a stress fracture in her shin. She came off the bench to lead the team with two service aces the next night against Georgia Tech.
Leading the team with 549 assists this year, setter Melissa Rabe is averaging 9.63 assists per game and also leads the squad with 27 service aces. The junior from Greensboro, N.C., had a tremendous weekend against Clemson and Georgia Tech last week, dishing out 51 assists, three aces, five digs and three blocks against the Tigers and 44 assists, three blocks against the Yellow Jackets. She also had 10 attack attempts over the course of the nine games, converting seven of those into kills while recording zero attack errors for a red-hot .700 attack percentage for the week.
Assistant coach Fiona MacPherson celebrated a birthday this past Sunday and freshman outside hitter Karlie Urbaniak turns 19 the same day the Pack plays at Maryland.
