RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer travels to No. 3 North Carolina on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack, 6-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, will take on a Tar Heel squad that has just one loss this season. UNC owns an overall record of 15-1-0 and is 7-1-0 in conference matches. NC State is 1-33-2 all-time against the Tobacco Road rivals and is winless in nine previous meetings at North Carolina during the regular season. NC State has not defeated North Carolina since Oct. 10, 2002, when the Wolfpack knocked off the then No. 1 Tar Heels, 2-1 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
The Wolfpack is looking to capture the elusive win at North Carolina when it travels to Chapel Hill on Thursday night to put an end to a nine-match skid that dates back to 1985. NC State will face its fifth ranked team in seven matches when the two teams meet for the 37th time. Leading the drive for the Wolfpack is freshman Lindsay Vera and senior Kim Selz. Vera has a team-best five goals and three assists for 13 points. Selz has had a stellar season in net. She has posted 45 saves with just 10 goals allowed in the seven ACC matches and has made 71 saves and allowed 13 goals overall. Selz has tallied 29 of her 45 ACC saves in the last three games, including 10 against Virginia Tech, a career-high 12 at Maryland and seven most recently against Boston College. NC State's defense has given up just one goal in three of its ACC matches, but at the same time, the Wolfpack was scoreless in those games, which includes the 1-0 loss to No. 10 BC last Sunday. The Pack will look to get back on track on Thursday.
A talented and stingy North Carolina team awaits the Wolfpack's arrival on Thursday night. The one loss on the Tar Heels' record is a 2-1 loss to No. 11 Duke on Oct. 9, at Fetzer Field. UNC boasts a roster with four All-Americans, including Lindsay Tarpley, also the 2003 National Player of the Year, Lori Chalupny, Kacey White and Heather O'Reilly. Both Tarpley and O'Reilly also are national team members who helped the US win gold in the 2004 Olympics in Greece. This season North Carolina has given up just eight goals, but six have been to ACC competition. Conversely, UNC has tallied 58, led by O'Reilly's 13 nets. White has provided 12 helpers to go with five goals, to lead the Heels. O'Reilly has either scored or assisted in all but two of UNC's 16 matches and White has assisted at least one time in 10 games. In net, UNC senior Aly Winget, the school's all-time career saves leader, has made 31 saves this season and allowed eight goals.
NC State will host Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. The day marks the end of the home slate for the Wolfpack and NC State's three seniors, Selz, Lydia McBath and Lauren Georges will be honored prior to the game.
