Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State softball team will unofficially start its 2006 season when it hosts the NC State Fall Tournament on Oct. 15 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. NC State will begin play at 11:30 am against Francis Marion in the first of three games for the Wolfpack. Head coach Lisa Navas' team will also play NC Central at 1:30 pm and Longwood at 4 pm. The participating teams in the tournament include: NCSU, North Carolina, NCCU, Longwood, Barton, Francis Marion, Greensboro College, Peace, Methodist, Meredith and Pitt CC.
NC State lost just one starter off of last year's team, a squad that finished fourth in the ACC with a 41-25 record overall and a 7-7 mark in conference. The Wolfpack also defeated rival North Carolina in the opening game of the ACC Tournament, the first tournament win in the programs two short years of existence.
NC State had three players make the all-ACC team last season as pitcher Abbie Sims, third baseman Jen Chamberlin and designated player/third baseman Heather Gelbard made the conference list. Sims was named to the NFCA All-Region team, while Gelbard was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection.
