Pope Wins Shot Put At UNC Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NC State track & field teams were in action Friday and Saturday at the UNC Indoor Invitational. Renee Gunning (Sr., Perkasie, Penn.) won the women's mile run and Mitchell Pope (So., Jackson, N.C.) won the men's shot put. The Wolfpack had nine top-five finishes for the weekend.
Pope captured the championship in the shot put for the second straight meet; this time with a heave of 55' 7 3/4" and he also placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 51' 7". Michael Hill (Jr., Marion, N.C.) reached 46' 11" in the triple jump, 22'1.75" in the long jump and 6'3.50" in the high jump. Eric Hoverstad (Sr., Raleigh, N.C) cleared 14' 9" in the pole vault to place seventh. Chris Crawford (So., Jacksonville, Mo.) placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 46'10 3/4" and he finished 11th in the weight throw. Also, Sajid Reshamwala (Sr., Cary, N.C.) ran the 800m for NC State.
Brian Clark (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) led the Wolfpack sprinters with a time of 6.99, while Jimmie Sutton, III (R-Fr., Boca Raton) recorded a 7:02, Miguel Scott (Fr., Miami, Fla.) a 7:14, Kevin Davis (So., Southfield, Mich.) a 7:18 and Matt Minnick (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) a 7:19. Davis placed 11th in the 400m with a time of 50.59, while Armand Quenum (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C. and LT Dickens (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) ran top-25 finishes in the 400m.
On the women's side, Gunning clocked a 4:51.51 in the mile to win the event. Angeline Blackmon (Fr., Rock Hill, S.C.) placed third with a 4:54.14, Kristina Roth (So., Selina, Ohio) was fourth with a 4:55.81 and Magin Kerbert (Fr., West Lafayette, Ind.) finished sixth with a 4:59.65. Erin Swain (Sr., Farfax Station, Va.) was the runner-up in the 3,000m with a time of 9:50.27. Josianne Lauber (Sr., Oxford, Penn.) took third in the 3000m with a time of 9:50.41, Ginger Wheeler (R-Jr., Winston-Salem, N.C.) placed fourth at 10:04.29 and Abigail Nelkie (Jr., West Branch, Mich.) came in seventh at 10:11.92.
Laila Thomas (So., Jacksonville, N.C) placed fourth in the pentathlon with a score of 2577. She reached 15' 4 1/4" in the long jump, ran the 60m hurdles in 10.21 and cleared 5' 4 1/4" in the high jump, good for fifth place. Mattie Bethea (Fr., Winston-Salem, N.C.) reached 17' 0.50" in the long jump, 36' 6 1/4" for fifth place in the triple jump, clearing 5' 4 1/4" in the high jump and running the 60m hurles in 9.66.
Kelly Smoke (Sr., Durham, N.C.) placed seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 57' 11" and she reached 40' 11" in the shot put. Tabitha Woddard (So., Spring Hope, N.C) cleared 11' 5 3/4" in the pole vault to finish eighth. Courtney Patterson (So., Fayetteville, N.C.) took seventh place in the 60m with a time of 7.68. She ran a 7.72 in the prelims to lead four Wolfpack sprinters. Joya Rodgers (So., Charlotte, N.C.) 7.73, Trellanie Green (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) 8:05 and Cassandra Williams (Fr, Selma, N.C.) ran the 60m in 8.27. Brie Ward (So., Stanford, N.C.) had a mark of 48' 7.5" in the weight throw. Tajaron Lewis ran the 400 in 1:05.29, Carla Babb (So., Lillington, N.C.) recorded a 2:35.41 in the 800m.
