Pope Wins Shot Put At Track & Field Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NC State track & field teams opened the indoor season Saturday with some strong performances in the sprint, distance, throws and jump events at the UNC Fast Times Meet. Kelly Smoke (Sr., Durham, N.C.) won the women's weight throw and was the runner-up in the shot put, Jennifer Boyd (R-Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) was the runner-up in the women's mile, while Mitchell Pope (So., Hudson, N.C.) won the men's shot put and Michael Hill (Jr., Marion, N.C) was runner-up in the men's triple jump.
Pope won the shot put with a throw of 54-7. Christopher Crawford (So., Jacksonville, N.C.) took third place with a mark of 46-1. Hill reached 48-7.5 in the triple jump to claim second place. Dexter Adams (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 23-0.5 and ran a 23.42 in the 200m. Matt Minnick (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) ran a 7.26 in the 60m and a 23.67 in the 200m, while Kevin Davis (So., Southfield, Mich.) clocked a 51.52 in the 400m and a 7.20 in the 60m. Omar Wells (So., Durham, N.C.) ran a 51.40 to place 11th in the 400m.
On the women's side, Smoke heaved the 20-pound weight 58-0.5 to win the event and her mark of 44-0.5 in the shot put was good for second place. Brie Ward (So., Stafford, Va.) finished sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 45-8 and she placed 11th in the shot put with a mark of 34-0.5. Boyd ran a 5:07.75 in the mile to take second place. Joanna Rodgers (R-Fr., Fairfax, Va.) finished fourth at 5:24.50 and Jessie Yester (R-Fr., Downington, Penn.) came in seventh with 5:40.61. Mattie Bethea (Fr., Winston-Salem, N.C.) cleared 5-6 in the high jump to place third while Laila Thomas finished seventh with a mark of 5-2.
Joya Rodgers (So., Charlotte, N.C.) ran a 7.67 in the 60m for fifth place and Courtney Patterson (So., Fayetteville, N.C.) placed ninth with a 7.78. Trellanie Green (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) and Cassandra Williams (Fr., Selma, N.C.) both competed in the 200m, Green running a 26.93 and Williams clocking a 28.42. Vanessa Blaylock ran a 1:05.70, Laura Strother (So., Mathews, N.C.) a 1:06.94 and Tajaron Lewis a 1:08.47 in the 400m to all finish in the top 30.
The Wolfpack returns to action next weekend when it travels to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the Clemson Invite Jan. 21-22.
