Q & A with Shanna Smith

RALEIGH, N.C. - Before joining head coach Lisa Navas' Wolfpack softball program, freshman Shanna Smith was taking care of business on the diamond for coach Anne Etienne at Albemarle High School, as well as leading the Carolina Cardinals to a state championship in 2003. With a hefty stat line under her belt, Smith earned all-conference honors while batting .385, driving in 40 runs, collecting 11 doubles, five triples and five home runs. A native of Albemarle, N.C., Smith recently sat down with GoPack.com and offered Pack softball fans a first opportunity to get to know her.
Q: What is your full name?
A: "Shanna Nicole Smith."
Q: Where are you from originally?
A: "I'm from Albemarle, N.C."
Q: Do your teammates have a nickname for you?
A: "They call me lil' rookie."
Q: What position do you play?
A: "I can play at three positions. I spend a lot of time at third base and first base, but I can also play shortstop."
Q: What are you studying at State?
A: "I am majoring in PRT sports management."
Q: What are some of your favorites? Let's start with musician.
A: "I'm a big Rascal Flatts fan."
Q: How about movie?
A: "Remember the Titans. I love that movie."
Q: What was the last movie you watched?
A: "White Chicks."
Q: What was the last book you read?
A: "Present."
Q: Favorite television show?
A: "I like to watch the Road Rules / Real World Challenges on MTV."
Q: What is your favorite vacation spot and why?
A: "I really like to go to the mountains on vacation because it's such a peaceful environment."
Q: Do you have a favorite place on campus?
A: "Pullen Park. It's a great place to hang out and relax."
Q: Let's talk about sports. Do you have a favorite pro sports team?
A: "The Atlanta Braves. They're my favorite team by far."
Q: Favorite athlete?
A: "Chipper Jones. No question."
Q: Back to getting personal. Who is someone that you admire a lot?
A: "I really look up to my grandmother. She is someone that I admire and really respect."
Q: Do you have any big fears?
A: "I have a fear of failure."
Q: What do you like about NC State?
A: "The campus. I love the atmosphere on campus."
Q: What do you like about the softball team?
A: "I really enjoy my teammates. We have a lot of fun together and we play hard."
Q: What is something most people don't know about you?
A: "I love blueberries!"
