ELON, N.C. - NC State women's soccer picked up its third-straight victory today, with a 2-1 score versus Elon on Sunday, Sept. 5. Wolfpack sophomore Carol Tognetti tallied her fourth goal of the season and senior Erin Griswold scored her second game-winner on the year as well. Elon's (1-3-0) lone goal was an own goal scored in the second half. NC State, 3-0-1, has outscored its opponents 8-to-1 in its last three matches. The Wolfpack opened the scoring early when Tognetti scored in the eighth minute. She netted directly off a free kick after Elon's keeper, Kara Zagol, fouled senior forward Anna Helenius at the top of the box. Tognetti's goal rattled in at the top right corner. She has eight career goals in her two seasons. The Phoenix tried to even the score when Monica Houseworth took at shot at the Wolfpack keeper, Kim Selz. The junior punched it out into the box for the Wolfpack defense to clear. NC State's second goal was tallied by Griswold in the 18th minute after Helenius took a corner kick nearside. Elon's keeper came out to punch it out, but Griswold stuck with it and put the ball into the back of the net. Elon scored its only goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half after a corner was bumped by a Wolfpack player on the far post. NC State outshot Elon 6-2 in the period and neither goalkeeper had a save. Houseworth and Emily Chesney had one shot apiece for Elon. Freshman Allie Wilkerson led the Pack with two shots, while Griswold, Tognetti and Helenius added one each. "We were really happy that we scored two goals early on, but I was disappointed that we didn't take advantage of the scoring chances that we created for ourselves," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "However, Tognetti scored a really nice free kick that was well out of the reach of their keeper to get an early lead. I give Elon credit because they did take advantage of theirs." In the second half, after a late arrival from the break, NC State took control of the tempo and held Elon to just one shot in the first 20 minutes. Selz stopped a header from Houseworth after Elon earned two-straight corners. NC State nearly had a third goal after Tognetti turned quickly off a throw in from sophomore Megan Buescher, but sent it straight to Zagol's hands. Elon tried once more with two minutes remaining to even the score, but Selz was their to make the quick save. Elon's Alisa Petitt took a 15 yard shot from the far side corner and Selz reached to her left to make the snatch. Both teams finished with five shots in the half. Selz tallied a game-high three saves, while Zagol made two. NC State will host its annual Summitt Hospitality Invitational beginning on Friday, Sept. 10.
