Raleigh, N.C. - For the second straight game, the NC State men's soccer team recorded a 5-1 victory. This time is was a 5-1 win over St. Francis (N.Y.), Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic hosted at Method Road. Junior Bryant Salter and sophomore Chris Wheaton each notched two goals on the day, as NC State has now outscored its first two opponents of the 2004 season 10-2. Unfortunately for the Pack, they once again surrendered the first goal of the contest. St. Francis's Damier Walker headed in a corner kick from Andrea Parpas at the 10:24 to put the Terriers up 1-0. That is all the scoring on the day for St. Francis, as NC State would score five unanswered for the win just like in the season opening win over Brevard on Wednesday. Salter matched St. Francis's corner kick by scoring one himself, a header from Rami Ghanayem in the 25th minute. Wheaton then got into the scoring column by adding two goals before the half. Wheaton's first came after St. Francis's keeper Adrian Benitez misplayed the ball, and Wheaton took advantage to notch his first goal of the day in the 36th minute. The assists went to John Queeley and Laye Traore. Just nine seconds before halftime, Wheaton scored again, heading in a free kick from Justin Branch. The Pack would add two more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. Freshman Hugh Cronin recorded his first career goal after taking a pass from junior Federico Peria at the 48:22 mark. NC State's final goal was scored by Salter in the 61st minute, as he took the ball at midfield and beat two Terrier defenders and scored on a breakaway. The Wolfpack will return to action SUnday afternoon and look to avenge a 1-0 loss last season to Temple. The game is at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
